I picked this for a formal affair but ended up choosing another dress instead that was more flattering. It wasn't bad, the detail around the waist provided some coverage around my apple shaped mid-section. The slit is very high and the dress would have needed higher heels for someone 5'3". Fabric was soft, deep burgundy/red color was very pretty. I'd say you can probably get away without a bra if necessary.

I wore this for a formal event for our school fundraiser. The fabric was so soft and the dress was comfortable and moved with me without being overly flowy - I could eat/dance/sit in it. No bra needed, which is rare - I felt secure and actually supported. It's hard to find dresses that are flattering for apple shapes, the high waistline and texture around the chest drew attention away from my waist. I got the XL as a back up, but this one fit perfectly. The deep green color is really beautiful - it was nice not to wear all black for once! Loved it!
