I got a this as a backup for my murder mystery dinner party, but if I had decidedly to wear it, I would have needed a small. There is stretch, so I’d pick the correct size for the smaller part of your body. I would have loved to wear it since it’s quite sparkly, and the fabric feels substantial. Definitely warm enough for winter and thick enough to smooth any insecurities. :) My partner ended up wearing the dress for his costume. Who knew he was a women’s size medium? ;)

This dress fit true to its size 4, which for me meant the top fit except the straps were too long (I usually wear size S/ 4 in shirts) and the bottom was VERY tight (I usually wear a size 6/28). If I had worn the size 6, the top would have fallen off. I’ll echo what someone else said in their review: this dress works *best* for people whose top and bottom halves are exactly proportional to each other, since it’s a woven silk and doesn’t stretch, but I felt sexy even though the fit wasn’t perfect. I found the “extra” fabric at the stomach a little annoying, until I had apps and cocktails. ;) But if you have a very flat tummy, it may hang strangely. On length: I’m 5’4” and don’t wear heels, so the dress was a few inches too long, but I never tripped over it. In the full-length photo, I was standing on my tiptoes, so if you’re taller than 5’7” this dress might be short on you. I would probably rent it again!
